I like to say that I teach young adults about the power of words; however, plainly stated, I teach English Language Arts (including English and reading) for 7th and 8th grade students. The 2011-2012 school year will mark my seventh year serving the community at Glen Lake.
During my undergraduate studies at The University of Michigan LS&A program, I studied a myriad of subjects at The Business School, including organizational behavior and business management. Focusing on the “people side” of business made me realize that my true passion in life is working with young adults.
As part of my graduate studies at The University of Rhode Island, I taught at the middle and high school levels at two Rhode Island public schools. Through my master’s program I earned a middle school endorsement that shed light on this unique time in an adolescent’s life. My teaching philosophy reflects this understanding and is grounded in real-life application. I want students to learn relevant information and make connections to new information based on their own life experiences. From my perspective the effectiveness of public schools stems from the fact that we are all different and we each have something to bring to the table.
On the day of my graduation in 2005, my husband and I loaded a U-Haul bound to Michigan to start a family. Motherhood and teaching young people allow me to fulfill my deepest passions and create a healthy balance in my life. Family and relationships are top on my priority list; however, my relationship with Christ comes first, as it positively impacts every facet of my life.
My favorite things in life include cuddling my children, visiting North Bar beach and Good Harbor beach, sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch, listening to music, reading books, writing in my children’s journals, going on dates with my husband, serving people in the community, shopping for bargains, and being a Laker!!!
